In Part 1, we explored the venue, daily schedule, and initial stages of meditation at Dhamma Setu. Now, let’s delve into the more personal and transformative aspects of my Vipassana experience.
Confronting Emotions and Embracing Annica:
Sitting for extended periods undoubtedly tested my willpower. Discomfort arose due to long hours in meditation posture, but gradually, it subsided with perseverance. More surprisingly, a cascade of emotions emerged even in the absence of external stimuli. Irritation, anger, pain, and sadness all surfaced.
The key lesson during this emotional rollercoaster was self-awareness. By observing these emotions without judgment, I could identify their triggers and understand their temporary nature. The concept of “Anicca” (impermanence) became a powerful tool. Just as sensations arise and pass away, so to do emotions. By acknowledging their impermanence, I learned to detach myself from their grip and find a sense of equanimity.
Tuning into Intuition and Mastering the Schedule:
Spending most of my time meditating fostered a deeper connection with my inner world. Interestingly, I’d often wake up a few minutes before the morning bell, guided by a sharper intuition. Since mobile phones were not allowed, surrendering to the rhythm of the schedule became liberating.
Having practised intermittent fasting for over a year, skipping dinner wasn’t a challenge. However, boredom did creep in, especially during the last two days. Yet, even this became a valuable lesson. Recognizing and overcoming boredom through focused meditation strengthened my mental resilience.
The Fruits of My Labour – Lasting Benefits:
The most profound impact of the Vipassana course has been on my daily life. Here are some of the significant changes I’ve observed:
- Enhanced Emotional Awareness: Previously, it might take hours to recognize my anger. Now, I can identify it at the moment, allowing me to respond more calmly and effectively.
- Anicca in Action: Applying the principle of impermanence to daily situations helps me navigate emotional challenges with greater ease.
- Improved Sleep: Falling asleep within 15–30 minutes (compared to previous struggles) has become a welcome change. This allows me to wake up early and establish a regular routine.
- Enhanced Organization: Vipassana instilled a sense of order and discipline that I now carry into other aspects of my life.
- Habit Formation: Daily meditation practice has become a cornerstone of my routine, contributing to a sense of inner peace.
A Journey of Self-Discovery:
The 10-day Vipassana course at Dhamma Setu was a transformative experience. It wasn’t always easy, but the challenges yielded invaluable lessons about self-awareness, emotional management, and inner peace. If you’re seeking a deeper understanding of yourself and a path to greater well-being, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring Vipassana meditation. It’s a journey of self-discovery with the potential to enrich your life in profound ways.
